The Levoit Core 400S is one of a handful of Core air purifiers with an S designation. The offical name for this model is actually a bit longer: Levoit VeSync Core 400S Smart True HEPA Air Purifier. The S is for smart, meaning the Levoit Core 400S and its siblings include smart features available by way of Levoit's VeSync app. In all, there are four Core S models with the 400S being the second largest where air cleaning capability is concerned. The Core 400S was designed for use in large rooms.
The Core 400S has 3-stage filtration by way of a pre-filter, H13 True HEPA filer and Activated Carbon filter. Like the air purifier itself, the filter has a cylindrical shape, and air enters from the sides and exits out the top.
Two Levoit technologies move the air through the Core 400S. One is called VortexAir which optimizes circulation power. This is a result of a whole system approach to the intake, fan blades and exhaust vents.
The second technology is AirSight Plus. AirSight Plus combines a PM2.5 laser dust sensor and an Auto mode. When the 400S is in Auto mode, AirSight Plus automatically detects air quality and adjusts the fan speed accordingly.
Levoit notes the Core 400S being capable of remvoing fibers, fine dust, hair, lint, pet dander, pet fur, bacteria and viruses in its pre-filter and H13 True HEPA filter. And, the Activated Carbon filter takes care of cooking odors, fumes, pet smells, smoke and VOCs.
Levoit recommends the Core 400S for rooms up to 403 square feet. EnergyStar's numbers are slightly more conservative, recommeding a maximum room size of 378 square feet.
With any air purifier, we recommend an even smaller room size, 80% of the EnergyStar rating. For the Core 400S, that would be 302 square feet.
We recommend this smaller maximum room size so the air purifier can operate at a fan speed lower than its maximum. This will not only be quieter during operation, but should also extend the life of the air purifier's motor.
As we'd expect in a smart air purifier from Levoit, the Core 400S is packed with features. We already mentioned our favorite, which is the Auto mode which adjusts the fan speed based upon changing indoor air quality.
Other standout features include a child lock and scheduling capability, as well as adjustment and real-time monitoring via the VeSync app (with WiFi connection). The Core 400S can also be controlled by voice when paired with Amazon's Alexa or Google Home.
In addition to adjusting the fan on its own, the PM2.5 laser particle sensor provides a visual display of indoor air quality on the top of the air purifier. The display uses both color and numbers. From best to worst, a colored ring changes between blue, green, orange and red. The number displayed on the top of the unit is the PM2.5 reading.
As we mentioned earlier, there are three additional Levoit Core air purifers with an S designation. Those models are the Core 200S (small rooms), Core 300s (medium sized rooms) and the Core 600S (larger rooms). Each model share the same features. The difference is in the size of the room they are used in.
